Pretty Lights’ last EP of 2010 is most definitely one of their most thought provoking releases to date. Derek Vincent Smith’s production continues to evolve as his popularity grows. In addition to recently passing the one million album downloads mark at PrettyLightsMusic.com, his relentless party touring is selling out shows everywhere. As a dance music artist, Pretty Lights is quickly reaching an unsurpassed level of infamy. Tracks on these albums channel Blockhead and DJ Shadow, as Smith implements more soulful vocal and horn samples. Lots of night and darkness references in these songs- nice themes. “Shining Bright Despite The Plight” is my favorite track musically and I love the title. Although much more mellow and jazzy, this EP still has that Pretty Lights sound with massive peaks and crescendos that make me envision sweaty college students having one of their first psychedelic live music experiences. With the addition of Adam Deitch as drummer, Pretty Lights’ percussion is going to be reaching a new level of intensity (listen to the third track). I love the idea of a three EP series, and am a big fan of the Sci-Fi album artwork.
