Capitol K – Artist Spotlight

This past summer I was fortunate enough to go on a trip that included some time in the UK.  I attended a small music festival called Festibelly to see our good friends The Egg play.  I wanted to make sure I brought back some fiery beats from the festival that no one in the US would know, and I think I have done just that.  I would like to introuduce you to one of my favorite musical encounters at Festibelly, a gentlemen by the name of Kristian Craig Robinson, a.k.a. Capitol K.  While taking an afternoon nap in my tent, I could hear some funky latin beats being played on a nearby dome stage.  I felt compelled to investigate.  I walked in and was surprised to find only a handful of people inside the tent, but what they lacked in numbers they made up for in energry.  Capitol K was sitting on the floor with a computer and all sorts of interesting instruments of the knob variety.  I asked the sound engineer who was playing, said the name a few times in my head to remember the name and joined in on the dance floor.  Luckily I did remember that name, and I have enjoyed listening to Capitol K ever since.

Capitol K described in his own words is a Londoner who has traversed a spectrum of electronic aesthetics throughout 13 years and 5 albums with releases on Planet Mu, XL, and Faith & Industry. A legend of contemporary electronica in the purest sense, Capitol K’s genre mashing, globe trotting musical explorations have seen him receive a steady stream of critical praise. The forthcoming new Capitol K album ‘Andean Dub’ (his 6th) was inspired by a road trip covering over 7000 kilometers of South America through the territories of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Meeting musicians, collecting instruments and market stall CDR’s, the trip was a fascinating experience and a chance for Kristian to dip his toes in the burgeoning alternative club scene of Buenos Aires whilst simultaneously tracing the wanderings of early 20th century South American metaphysical literature.

Below are some of my favorite songs of his so check ’em out.  I also posted a mix called Cumbias Sonideras below, and I highly recommend giving it a try.  Each song is surprisingly interesting and fun to listen to.
