Consider the Source + Cosmal + Meszenjah

::: Consider the Source :::

NYC trio Consider the Source defy easy description. If intergalactic beings of pure energy, after initiation into an order of whirling dervishes, built some kind of pan-dimensional booty-shaking engine, powered by psychedelics and abstract math, it’d probably just sound like a CTS tribute band. Drawing from progressive rock, fusion and jazz, with alien sounds soaked in Indian and Middle Eastern styles, CTS blends disparate parts into a striking, utterly original whole. Dubbed “Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion”, the band’s music strikes a rare balance between cerebral and emotional, intellectual and primal. A relentless touring schedule has won the band a fervent following from California to Israel, with fans ranging from jam-band hippies and jazz cats to corpse-painted headbangers and prog geeks.

Formed in 2004, Consider the Source features Gabriel Marin on fretless double-neck guitar, bassist John Ferrara, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Mann. Called “the guiding light for his generation of six-stringers”, Marin channels the mystical fury of McLaughlin and Coltrane into wailing melodies, kaleidoscopic soundscapes and boneshaking riffs. With a background in classical musics both Eurpoean and Indian, and an instinct for avant-jazz and destructive metal, Marin’s hypnotic fusion of styles is ever unpredictable. Ferrara’s propulsive, percussive attack, equally suited to simple grooves and impossible chords, can ground the music or launch it into space. His madcap gumbo of slap bass, Indian rhythms, earthy minimalism and complex tapping constantly pushes into strange new worlds, whilst still dropping thick booty-clap beats. Underneath them lies Mann’s rolling thunder; dense rhythmic architecture built from pure swagger and bounce. Half double-bass prog-metal, half crackle-pop Buddy Rich swing, with African and Balkan swirls, Mann’s muscular, freewheeling polyrhythms are the engine fuel for Consider’s multiversal mischief. Even when not improvising, Consider’s music is always a conversation, a roiling stew of dynamic interplay. Each member of Consider the Source alternately leads and follows, spars and assists; in any single song, alliances are made and broken, bargains struck and divorces finalized.
Touring from coast to coast, as well as Europe and the Middle East, has not only earned the band thousands of fans, but has allowed them to perform with wide variety of well-known artists, including Victor Wooten, Wayne Krantz, King Crimson Projekt, Kris Myers (Umphrey’s McGee), Wyclef Jean, Andy Statman, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Dumpstaphunk, Keller Williams, George Porter, Jr., Jeff Sipe, Panzerballet (Germany), Eatliz (Israel), Freak Kitchen (Sweden), Morglbl (France), and many others. They have performed at numerous festivals and events, including Catskill Chill, The Big Up, Burning Man, Sun Seekers Ball (Canada), Mid-Summer Meltdown, Rootwire, the NYC Fretless Guitar Festival, and the NYC Gypsy Festival. The band’s newest album, “F**k It! We’ll Do It Live” is available from considerthesourcemusic.bandcamp.com.

::: Stokeswood :::

The five members of Stokeswood woke up one day in a black van with a trailer full of equipment and not one one of them knew how they got there.

Atlanta-based, Low-Endie Rock band, Stokeswood, was formed by lead vocalist Adam Patterson and electric guitarist, Mark Godwin. The five-piece also comprises drummer Jon Joiner, keyboardist Michael Roman and bass player/producer Justin Mullinix. Stokeswood’s independently released debut album, “Carassia” (2009), is like a sonic excursion between the lines of a poet’s story-telling prowess. Stokeswood’s sophomore album, “In the Field of the Vibrations” (2011), showcases a vocal-centric aesthetic and an array of synthesizers and guitars that are illuminated by infectious dance beats. The evolution from acoustic to electronic was a natural progression during the recording process. Stokeswood is currently and constantly touring the East Coast.

::: Jahman Brahman :::

ahman Brahman is a five-member collaboration originating from Columbus, Ohio in 2003, and currently residing in the mountains of Asheville, NC. The musical intuition of each member overcomes the restrictions of any particular genre as they pioneer the musical trail with a sound completely their own. The name Jahman Brahman emerged from each member’s goal to achieve the ultimate state of musical cohesion; each instrument connected to one another to create a piece of music from the heart of one.

They’ve described their particular style as shred ‘n’ flow, a dynamic sound with a wide breath of influence, but a focus on rich, fluid, progressions of energy. Providing the low end, Nate “Brother” Brown brings his own style of funked out and super fresh bass grooves giving depth to Justin Brown’s full and conscious lyrics. Drummer Rowdy Keelor gives the sound its steady concrete pulse providing the heartbeat for Casey Chanatry’s riveting guitar-work. Layered on top are Josh Loffer’s transcendent key strokes and myriad of effects. Combined, Jahman Brahman leaves the listener with a message on life, love, and the wonders experienced being part of an extraordinary musical family.

Each member holds a unique passion toward many different audio paths, with influences ranging from classic rock to electronica; from punk to jazz. Instead of conforming, they ascend music through the coalescence of their diverse styles, taking risks that unfold into powerful jams and creative compositions.

This year the Fungus leaves his homeland Australia to infect the minds and bodies of those around the globe. Moving in between glitch saturated Drum & Bass through epic cinematic soundscapes, orchestral compositions and organic ethnically infused bass makes for a synesthetic aural landscape that has to be felt to be heard.

If you like music from labels like Dirtybird Records, Pets Recordings, Hot Creations etc. then you need to dive into the world of Bass Glutton. Producer/DJ Nick Smeed wanted to take his music back to where he started before the aggressive styles of his more commonly know identity of L.E.D.FUT took over. Even as L.E.D.FUT Nick always expressed his versatility through his production showing that he could dabble in just about any genre and do it well. If you know Nick one thing that he has always expressed was that he had a real sweet spot when it came to deep, sexy, bassy music with a hiphop/rnb influence. Starting out as a hiphop/Rnb producer this came as no surprise. Bass Glutton is essentially electronic music made for people who love to overindulge in those sensual, soulful, intelligent, in your face bassy beats and grooves. Bass Glutton intends to elaborate on the current styles in this realm of electronic music and also pepper in some of the classic styles we have all come to love over the years. His impecable skill of fusing many styles and adaptability to read and please just about any crowd makes for unforgettable live performances that are something you truly have to experience for yourself.
