Less is more with SBTRKT

As the seasons finally have changed, I’m definitely getting hit with that all too familiar wave of summertime nostalgia. Experience has proven that the best way for me to indulge in these wistful feelings is to break out the iPod and revisit this summer’s bangers. This summer was definitely generous with the new releases and remixes that hit the sound waves, but if I had to choose a favorite new album, the award goes to the masked SBTRKT. His collaboration on “Wildfire” with Little Dragon vocalist, Yukimi Nagano was a smash hit and remixed by the likes of Drake and Drumma Boy.

Releasing his first self-titled full length on June 28, 2011, UK producer, SBTRKT (pronounced “subtract”), dropped some straight electronic fire. In this album alone he layers haunting vocals over 2-step, house, grime, funk, R&B and dubstep all the while maintaining a futuristic quality. His ability to experiment and push the boundaries and laws of sound makes for an extraordinarily exciting and unpredictable listening experience. Adding to this element of spontaneity is SBTRKT’s desire to maintain anonymity as an artist. His goal is to let his music speak for itself unbridled by any external elements. He sheds his reality and takes on the “SBTRKT” persona as he covers his face with colorful spirit masks, solely offering his music to the masses.

This mix-tape recorded for Mary Anne Hobbs’ XFM radio show includes tracks from some huge names right now like Little Dragon, Gold Panda, Zomby, Disclosure, Pangaea, and SBTRKT himself. It’s perfect for relaxing on the couch, zoning out at work, or on a dark dance floor.
