Pretty Lights: Passing By Behind Your Eyes

Derek Vincent Smith, aka Pretty Lights (whose name was inspired by this poster) released his third album on October 6th, 2009, for free. He, like most modern artists we love, (Orchard Lounge, Radiohead, and Big Gigantic to name a few) realizes that free music is a powerful distribution model. I heard people at my office, who otherwise would have never heard Pretty Lights, buzzing about his free album release yesterday. If you wish to download any of his previous albums or this new album hit up his downloads page on his newly revamped website.

The album Passing By Behind Your Eyes is a beautiful evolution from his past releases, while still maintaining his unique yet very recognizable sound. It’s less of a dance party but overall the most enjoyable of his albums to listen to. He seems to use more real instrument samples, in an eclectic type of way. He obviously has a thing for Biggie and well known hip hop samples, which resonates with our generation, who grew up listening to hip hop. We would love to hear your take on this album, so be sure to drop some comments in the comment section below this article.
