Govinda – Alchemy Amalgamation Mix

Shane Madden, known as Govinda, really impressed us when he brought his music to the Northeast in December, and I’ve been rocking this mix ever since. He’s an immensely talented producer, DJ, and performer, playing virtuoso violin in his live sets. “Classically trained” doesn’t begin to describe it! A unique blend of tribal elements with driving dance beats from hip-hop and dubstep to his own swampland sounds, Govinda‘s style has evolved to keep up with what is hot, while retaining the soul of his early work.

Ancient horns, drums, and melodies from around the world, mixed with booming bass and futuristic effects, make for an eclectic ride that is always changing. I’m not usually a fan of a lot of vocals in EDM, but he manages to pull it off really well here. The beats are upbeat and sexy, carrying us through an hour of music that could destroy any dancefloor. Cultured and refined, with a street swagger and gangster edge to balance the melodic feminine elements, this hybrid style makes dubstep a lot more interesting.

His latest album Universal On Switch took things to the next level musically and his touring schedule has expanded. He’s also a fun, down to Earth guy, dancing with us to Archnemesis after his set.¬†Gotta be the coolest thing to come out of Texas!

Catch him at Envision Festival in Costa Rica if you’re a lucky one, or at Wakarusa, and watch for him in your city. And Shane, next time you’re in the Northeast, we hope you’ll be headlining and bringing the incredible bellydancers!
