Based off only a week of promoting, I could tell the energy was going to be massive at World Famous Productions‘ event at the Red Fox Tavern. The people had been waiting a long time to see Mimosa perform his womp-worthy rhythms, and I showed up early to ensure I could grab a ticket. I knew he was sure to bring a crowd purely based on his performance in Arcata last fall. At that show, he paired up with Sleepy Head to form the duo Sexy Time, and the inaugural sexy time after party, at our Rage Compound which has set quite a well known precedent of our willingness to rage.

As the evening warmed up, Epcot opened with a single table serato set with some groovy bass music, tech-house like waggle-womps and old school Hip-Hop and R&B mash ups. As the crowd sauntered in, I observed the usual mix of Humboldt folks. Anyone from college professors, dready growers from the mountain, and a trio of artsy cougars from as far as Crescent City (who ended up closing out the evening in style at the Rage Compound) were there in full effect. There were older local types, a purveyor of wraps and jewels straight outta the Arizona gem show, young college kids in Humboldt hoodies and shwilly burner babes in rage level three attire. As I observed the scene, I realized this was the first show I was attending with the intention of recording and retelling my experience. I was looking at the venue in a new light, and I became overwhelmed with a deep connection to the North Coast’s music scene. I felt extremely lucky to be where I was; amidst a flock of beautiful people, floating in a myriad of lasers, and standing under a one and half story wall of sound with the three letter guarantee of auditory abuse: JBL.

As Nasty Nasty set up and rocked out to Epcot’s last couple songs, the crowd began to swell with intensity. Epcot thanked the people for their love and introduced Nasty Nasty - a Frisco native – who got right into his set with a real heavy jammer that progressed into a full out audio onslaught. As me and my fellow front row woofer ninjas erupted into the first wave of a series of face contorting dance-offs, the super-supplemented sound systems rallied in unison. Nasty maintained a cool, melodic demeanor while mixing despite dropping HARD bass and keeping the jams going and going. Most notably for me was the single “No Names” and his remix of the Emalkay track “When I Look at You.” Fucking hard.

When Mimosa hit the set the place was ready to erupt. It was by far the loudest I have ever heard the Fox‘s system rock out, although when asked by the sound engineer in the bathroom how the monitors sounded, I obviously told him to “Turn it UP!” Mimosa played a good amount of songs from his new album and some of his older hits that everyone loves. The energy in the crowd and on stage seemed to feed off one another. As Robert Collado twisted and pryed at his Ableton controllers, bending the progressive synths into a faster tempo, the crowd bobbed in anticipation. Just when the time was right — with a flip of a switch, point to the sky, a hop and a jump — the beat dropped and the crowd erupted over and over. His timing and selection seemed to be fate as every note appeared to be perfectly placed. The rage was so strong that evening that the Eureka Police Department decided to tell the Red Fox to turn it the FOX down. I’d like to say thanks to me.

Part of the way through Mimosa’s set, Epcot came back out with a mic. At first I thought he was just there to hype the crowd, but then he began freestyling to the bass heavy riddims of Mimosa. As they displayed an awesome level of intensity raging together on stage, Epcot showed some impressive Emcee skills. As 2 o’clock neared (the time in the evening where I miss New York’s 4 am closing) an inevitable moment out on the town was apparent, as is the case anywhere in California. After the last beat dropped and Mimosa turned off the sound, the people erupted with a mix of appreciation and demands for more! With a swift closing of his laptop, I assumed the evening would end without an encore, but to my delight he asked the silly question “do you want more?” To the shouts of the raging masses in Eureka, Mimosa ended his set with a slower new jam called “Your Love” off his new EP “The Finite.” The melodic womps allowed us in the audience to soak in the last bits of the lights and sounds and reflect on the night’s auditory adventure, only to continue dirty dancing at the Rage Compound in Arcata until sunrise.
