Massive Anticipation for the New Attack

The eclectic “trip-hop” band Massive Attack has raised eyebrows once again. Known for their unique artistic output, the band fell nothing short of shocking with the release of the video for their new song “Paradise Circus“. This video serves as a teaser, a prerequisite to their highly anticipated 5th studio album “Heligoland”. It’s a friendly reminder as to how sui generis Massive Attack truly is.
As a long time fan of Massive Attack, I’ve experienced the long wait everybody has been through since their last studio LP, “100th Window”, was released in 2003. Many rumors and false information later, producer Neil Davidge announced that LP5 had been completed and was set for a February 9th, 2010 release! The album – as usual – will feature a variety of guest singers such as Damon Albarn, Marina Topely-Bird, Guy Garvey and Tunde Adebimpe. Longtime cohort Horace Andy is also set to return, alongside Massive Attack founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grand Marshall (Daddy G).
The song “Paradise Circus” features Hope Sandoval, an American singer-songwriter and lead singer for Mazzy Star. The Toby Dye directed video features former porn star Georgina Spelvin, sharing her candid perspective on filming the infamous adult film “The Devil in Miss Jones”. Original shots of the 1973 hit are interlaced with Spelvin’s honest take on her physical and emotional state during the production of the film nearly forty years ago.
In my eyes Stereogum put it best while talking about how sultry the video is:
“Another way [to describe it] is “Titanic if it were a porn documentary,” where if instead of flashing back to cute scenes with Leo, Old Rose was flashing back to money-shots with Disco Stu.”
Now keep an open mind, a closed door, the volume up, and take note on how the band prove themselves as a musical force once more. Then again, with credentials like theirs, proving anything is no longer necessary.
