Deadmau5, out of Toronto, has always been one of our favorites. Known for dark beats and powerful builds, he is a prolific producer who does a lot of remixes and sample-building for top artists. His live sets consist mainly of his own material, assembling tracks on the fly using cutting edge computer technology and software he’s helped to develop.
Usually very minimal, progressive house, he has recently expanded his range to include a wider variety of sounds, effects and styles. The result is more danceable than ever, generally more upbeat while maintaining a certain depth that made the patient pulsings of old stand out.
Examples of this are his 2 new EPs that toss around singles from his September release For Lack Of A Better Name: “Ghosts ‘n Stuff” feat. Rob Squire, an electro tune that bangs like a Justice track, with 3 versions and remixes by Sub Focus and Nero;
And “Strobe”, an ambient chill-out tune with club edits and mixes by DJ Marky & S.P.Y., Plump DJs and Michael Woods – grab them at Beatport.
He has a new album of originals coming in May, launched by his biggest headlining performance ever at the Brixton Academy in London April 30th.
I caught the show at Terminal 5 in NYC and was really impressed by the energy and new direction of the material. Check it out for yourself!
