Unfamiliar with the Foxboro area, and feeling slightly Perpetual Groove deprived, the UseYourHead crew decided to embark 30 minutes south of Boston to check out their Friday night show at new venue Showcase Live. It had been a while since P Groove last played the Boston area, and for only $12, featuring theBridge opening, a good crowd of people decided to check it out. Appearing to be a veteran Perpetual Groove fan base, the atmosphere was electric, to say the least, from start to finish. They ran through a 2 hour set playing fan favorites such as “Teakwood Blues”, and jamming some songs out to epic 10 minute dance sessions. The range the band shows from southern influenced rock to jam band to psychadelia to jam-tronica (almost Lotus-esque at times) is impressive, and allows for a show to never become dull or corny. They even raged a 20 minute version of K.C. & The Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight”! We thoroughly enjoyed the up close & personal set, the room to dance as well as the opportunity to meet the band afterwards and at least give them a “whats up”. If you haven’t had the chance to check out this band I highly suggest you do, and if necessary wait for festy season to arrive again because you can bet they’ll be all over it.
SHOWCASE LIVE: PREMIERE LIVE MUSIC VENUE
Showcase Live was an impressive venue, suiting acts such as Perpetual Groove and full bands that focus on guitars with a strong drumming backbone. From the moment you walk in, you realize how it separates itself from most venues around Boston, with a more modern approach. It is well suited for a positive crowd experience. The outer ring surrounding the dance floor is carpeted, has a plethora of bar tables, and is elevated about a foot high to ensure optimal viewing. The entire back wall is lined with an impressive, fully stocked (yet expensive) bar. On the outsides of the rectangular dance floor there are booths to catch a quick breather from the dancing. The stage is about three feet high, and a good size to keep the band members and the sound spacious. The impressive state of the art mixing board is on the right side of the stage. Unfortunately, because it is in the Gillette Stadium complex and owned by the Kraft Family, it does have a curfew, limiting shows to about midnight. However, with ticket prices like $12, plenty of parking, great sound & lighting and relatively lax security, Showcase Live is a venue I will drive 30 minutes from Boston to attend.
